- Third degree creosote is a thick, hardened, glossy buildup that coats the flue walls like a layer of shellac and is the hardest to remove, sometimes requiring chemical treatments or even flue replacement.
Why Is Creosote Dangerous?
This is the biggest concern with creosote is that it’s extremely flammable, and when enough of it accumulates inside your chimney flue, a single stray ember or a particularly hot fire can ignite it – causing what’s known as a chimney fire.
Chimney fires burn at temperatures that can exceed 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit – while a firebox can take on this type of heat, the chimney itself isn’t designed for it. At that temperature, the fire can crack clay flue tiles, warp metal liners, and compromise the structural integrity of the entire chimney. In worst-case scenarios, the heat transfers to adjacent framing and insulation inside the walls, and a house fire follows.

Always burn properly seasoned hardwood that has been dried for at least six months to a year.
- Restricted airflow. A partially closed damper, blocked air supply, or an oversized firebox relative to the flue size all reduce the draft and slow the exit of combustion gases. The longer those gases linger in the flue, the more time they have to cool and condense.
- Cooler flue temperatures. A chimney needs heat to function properly. In warmer regions, homeowners often light smoldering, decorative fires. Because the flue stays relatively cool, the rising smoke loses its buoyancy, sticks to the chimney liner, and creates a thick layer of creosote much faster than a hot, roaring fire would.
How Often Should I Have My Chimney Cleaned To Prevent Creosote Buildup?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys be inspected at least once per year and cleaned as needed. If you use your fireplace regularly throughout the cooler months, an annual cleaning before the season starts is a smart standard practice.
Can I Remove Chimney Creosote Myself?
This is highly advised against. Standard DIY chimney brushes are often ineffective against this stubborn buildup, and attempting to scrape it away without the proper specialized equipment can lead to structural damage to your chimney liner.
