Chimney sweeping is a comprehensive service that clears your flue of combustion byproducts, identifies structural issues, and ensures your chimney is operating at peak performance. At Chim Chiminey Sweep, our sweeping service is always paired with a detailed inspection so you walk away with a complete understanding of your chimney’s condition – not just a cleaned flue and a handshake.

  • Removal of creosote buildup and debris from the flue
  • Inspection of the fireplace and chimney components
  • Detailed inspection report documenting chimney condition
  • Obstruction removal for efficient smoke ventilation
  • Honest recommendations for repairs – only what’s necessary

We Offer Stage 3 Creosote Removal

Stage 3 creosote is the most hazardous form of buildup a chimney can have, appearing in the form of a hardened, tar-like glaze that clings to flue walls and is highly combustible. Standard sweeping methods won’t touch it. At Chim Chiminey Sweep, our certified technicians are trained to identify and treat these deposits using HeatShield® Stage 3 Creosote Removal or Poultice Creosote Remove (PCR). How does this work?

  • Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR), a specialized chemical compound, is applied inside the chimney to dissolve and absorb hardened creosote deposits.
  • As the PCR compound absorbs the creosote and dries, the deposits lose adhesion and fall away from the flue surfaces.
  • Once the chemical treatment has loosened the buildup, we remove any remaining residue with a professional chimney sweeping.

Why Chimney Sweeping Is Essential for San Diego Homeowners

Even in a warmer climate, a neglected chimney is a safety and structural liability.

Reduces Chimney Fire Risk

Even minimal fireplace use creates creosote, and without removal, it becomes a serious fire hazard over time.

Improves Fireplace Performance

Obstructions and buildup restrict airflow, making your fireplace harder to light and less effective at producing heat.

Protects Against CO

A blocked chimney doesn’t vent properly, meaning CO can back up into your home.

Ensures Smoke Flow

Sweepings keep smoke flowing safely out of your home – instead of reversing into living spaces.

Maintains Chimney Health

Small structural issues -damaged liner, crumbling crown, etc. – escalate quickly when left unaddressed.

Offers Peace of Mind

Older homes especially tend to have systems that no longer meet current safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my chimney swept?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys be inspected at least once per year, with sweeping performed as needed based on usage and buildup. Even if you use your fireplace infrequently, an annual inspection is the best way to catch structural issues early and confirm your system is ready to operate. The frequency of sweeping itself depends on how much creosote accumulates, which our inspection will determine.

What is creosote, and why does it matter?

Creosote is a byproduct of wood combustion that accumulates on the inner walls of your flue. It is highly flammable and is the primary cause of chimney fires. There are three stages of creosote buildup, with Stage 3 being extremely difficult to remove and posing the greatest fire risk. Regular sweeping services remove creosote before it advances to dangerous levels.

Will a chimney sweeping make a mess in my home?

Cleanliness is something we take seriously. Our technicians set up protective drop cloths and use professional equipment designed to contain soot and debris throughout the process. Past customers have specifically noted that our team leaves homes in the same condition they found them – not a speck of soot left behind.

Do I need a chimney sweeping if I haven’t used my fireplace in years?

Yes. Chimneys that sit unused are still susceptible to deterioration, animal intrusion, moisture damage, and structural breakdown – all of which can have a negative impact on your home’s safety and condition. In fact, an unused chimney is considered an ideal spot for nesting animals, as it’s warm and hidden from predators.

A chimney that hasn’t been used in years should absolutely be inspected and swept before it’s put back into service to ensure it’s functioning as safely and efficiency as possible.

How long does a chimney sweeping take?

Most residential chimney sweeping appointments take between one and two hours, depending on the size of the system and the level of buildup or complexity involved. Our technicians take the time to do the job thoroughly (including the inspection) so you receive a complete picture of your chimney’s condition – rather than a rushed visit.
